Recent changes to the Police And Criminal Evidence Act mean that Police Officers can now conduct many more interviews away from the usual police station.  This removes many of the built in safeguards of the process that has protected the rights of millions of arrestees over the last thirty plus years.

So I the police offer to interview me away from the Police Station such as at home, work or the location of the offence, what are my rights?

000009671697xsmallFirstly remember, there is no such thing as a little chat.  Some may be inclined to accept a quickie interview in order to be on their way.  Worse still they may be more inclined in a comfortable environment such as their home to make admissions they would never do in a police station.

Officers are now routinely wearing body worn cameras recording conversations with suspects and witnesses.  Any admissions made my a suspect could be used in evidence against them.

What about Legal Advice?

Always always always ask for legal advice whenever you are interviewed as a suspect by the police.  Even if you think that you are sure have or have not committed an offence.  Mortons Solicitors can provide expert legal advice.

How much does it cost?

FREE.  Any interview under caution conducted by an officer is covered by legal aid.  It is not means tested.   It ensures that your legal rights are protected and you can make an informed decision about whether to answer questions. It does NOT matter if the interview is at your home, work, police station or even the offence location.

Don’t be misled that it will take hours.  We have a team of solicitors and lawyers on standby 24 hours a day and we are obliged to arrive within 45 mins of being informed the police are ready to interview.  In many cases we can arrive much sooner.  If its pre-arranged we can arrive at the specified time.

So the question isn’t why get a solicitor.  When it is free and protects your legal rights, the question is why wouldn’t you want one.

Mortons Solicitors are here to help.  Call us if you have an pre-arranged volunteer interview under caution for any criminal offence on 0161 477 1121.
