Morton’s Solicitors undertake a significant quantity of private client work but also have a considerable legal aid contract for criminal defence work.

As legal Cashier for Morton’s Solicitors Limited you will be entrusted with managing the day-to-day financial operations that underpin the success of the business. This role is office based in Stockport. Experience of being a legal cashier is essential.

Responsibilities

• Carry out daily banking activities and reconcile both client and office accounts to ensure all transactions are accurately recorded and compliant with regulatory requirements.

• Process receipts, payments, and transfers for client and office accounts efficiently, always maintaining precise records.

• Ensure strict adherence to Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) Accounts Rules in all financial operations, safeguarding the firm’s reputation for compliance.

• Handle disbursements, invoices, and expense claims promptly while maintaining clear communication with relevant stakeholders.

• Manage petty cash systems and process credit card statements with accuracy, ensuring all expenditures are properly documented.

• Assist with month-end and year-end financial processes by preparing reconciliations and supporting documentation as required by the Finance Manager.

• Liaise effectively with solicitors, fee earners, clients, and third-party suppliers to resolve queries and facilitate smooth financial transactions across departments.

• Reconcile client ledgers regularly to maintain accurate financial records and identify any discrepancies or anomalies swiftly.

• Support VAT reporting processes by ensuring correct VAT treatment on all transactions in line with current legislation.

• Contribute to audit preparations by compiling necessary documentation and providing general support to the wider finance function as needed.

• Legal aid billing – dependant upon previous experience.

Requirements

• Demonstrated experience as a Legal Cashier

• Comprehensive knowledge of SRA Accounts Rules

• Exceptional accuracy and attention to detail

• Proficiency in using legal accounting software

• Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel

• Excellent communication abilities
